Athlete 1 is returning to training from a long-term injury. The coaching process involves very gradually building up training stimulus with the aim of returning to previous performance levels. There may be one discipline that allows greater training intensity or a technical component of the race that can be focused on when overall training stimulus is limited.
Athlete 2 has built training stimulus gradually with no injury concerns and has now exhausted available training time in the week. After each training block profiling tests have been conducted to estimate the athletes physiological parameters and key targets are identified within the training for the next block. Training is altered by intensity distribution to cater for the aims.
